Commencement
With commencement speeches filling our feeds, it's a perfect time to pause and reflect. Commencement isn’t just a grand event marking the end of academic pursuits—it’s a beginning. But why reserve this idea for special occasions?
Every day is an opportunity to commence anew, to embrace the present moment with a beginner’s mind. In Zen Buddhism, the beginner's mind is a state of openness and eagerness, free of preconceived notions. This mindset allows us to experience life fully, without being tethered to the future.
In marketing, and in life, we often fall into the trap of always preparing for the next big thing. We move from one project to another, always chasing future success. But the true magic happens when we immerse ourselves in the now, when we are fully present and engaged in what we are doing.
We often box people into rigid roles—"You're an engineer, so you do this," or "You're a marketer, so you do that." Every day is a new day to choose what you want to start. We are not confined by our titles or past experiences. We have the freedom to explore new paths and redefine our roles.
Let’s not lose sight of the importance of staying present. Each day brings new possibilities and challenges. By approaching every moment with curiosity and openness, we can truly savor the journey and not just the destination.
As Alan Watts said, “Making plans for the future is of use only to people who are capable of living completely in the present.”
So, let’s commence every day, embracing each moment with a fresh perspective and an open heart.
