Zoom out

Zoom out

When in doubt… zoom out.

Reggie Watts he captured a concept that’s essential for strategic thinking, especially in go-to-market (GTM) strategies. There’s an almost instinctual pull to dig into the details—to optimize every lever, dissect every metric, and tweak every tactic. But sometimes, the very progress we’re chasing gets lost in the noise. That’s where zooming out comes in.

Imagine a GTM team engrossed in fine-tuning email sequences to nurture leads. They’re perfecting every element, yet engagement metrics remain flat. By zooming out, they might see the issue isn’t with the email content but with the entire approach: maybe the segment is misaligned, or the channels aren’t reaching the right audience. Pulling back like this allows you to reassess what actually matters.

Or consider a team focused on training their salesforce for high-touch interactions with clients. At first, the emphasis might be on detailed scripting and product knowledge. But by stepping back, it could become clear that awareness is the larger issue—clients may not even fully understand the value of the offering. Zooming out could lead to a more comprehensive solution, encompassing brand positioning, content strategy, and targeted education initiatives.

Zooming allows you to recalibrate for long-term growth.

You don't have to abandon the details but you can start to see how they fit into the bigger picture.

The economics of the world is to constantly pull you in, or push you to lean in.

In my experience, zooming out might just be the most productive move you make.
